Allan Saint-Maximin rescues point as Newcastle draw 1-1 with Wolves at Molineux

Wolves vs Newcastle 28/08/22

Newcastle United’s Allan Saint-Maximin cancelled out Ruben Neves’ opener as the former’s side robbed Wolverhampton Wanderers of their first Premier League victory of the season.

The Frenchman dispatched a sumptuous volley with beautiful technique after a failed clearance attempt from Hwang Hee-Chan fell to him to salvage a point in the dying embers of the match at Molineux.

The goal gifted the game a second compilation-worthy strike after the Wolves captain opened the scoring five minutes before half time with an arrowing effort from the edge of the box.

Newcastle, depleted of multiple of their key assets, kept their opponents entertained for the duration of the match, fighting until the end despite the notable omissions of star men Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimarães, and new record signing Alexander Isak.

The home side thought they had surely secured the much sought after victory when Pedro Neto slid the ball into the path of Raúl Jiménez who tapped home, however the tap-in was chalked off for a foul in the build-up after referee Peter Bankes viewed the pitch-side screen.

A winner was almost found for the away side however, as substitute Elliot Anderson hit the bar with a last-minute header.

Other notable chances came in the form of a poke wide from close range by Joe Willock and efforts at goal from Saint-Maximin, whilst the hosts attempted to trouble the opposition keeper through effort from the likes of Jiménez and Neto.

Wolves will come away from the game feeling the more depleted of the two, defending well until the mistake from Hwang and lack of concentration to leave Newcastle’s no.10 open in a dangerous position.

Newcastle will certainly come away the more positive; the last minute breakthrough giving them important momentum going into their next fixture against a ruthless Liverpool side.

The Magpies continues their unbeaten start to the Premier League season after securing a point in Wolverhampton, with this match being their third draw in a row after winning their first game 2-0.

Wolves however continue to search for a maiden win in the league and will be desperate to beat Bournemouth on Wednesday who were dismantled 9-0 by Liverpool on Saturday.

Bruno Lage’s will see this as the perfect moment to announce themselves this season against the newly-promoted side.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe will be hoping to have their new £63 million man Isak available for the game at Anfield to provide more of an obvious threat on goal, with Chris Wood not being as prolific since coming in last January as he may have liked.

All eyes will be on both sides this week as they may still look to bolster their squads before the transfer window slams shut on Thursday.
